Mary Anne Harvey Receives Allen Buckingham Award

Disability Law Colorado's executive director, Mary Anne Harvey received the Allen Buckingham Senior Leadership Legacy Award from the Colorado Commission on Aging on Thursday, November 18, 2021. The award is given to individuals who champion the needs of older people and demonstrates leadership that impacts the well-being, quality of life and care of aging Coloradans. Mary Anne was nominated for the Allen Buckingham award by Bill Hanna, former Dir. Policy and Legislation at CDHS and Randy Chapman, former Legal Services Director at Disability Law Colorado.  This award recognizes Mary Anne's legacy of promoting and protecting the rights of Colorado's senior adults through two Older Americans Act programs (State Long-Term Care Ombudsman program and Legal Assistance Developer for Elders) that have been part of Disability Law Colorado's work since 1988. Her leadership has impacted the quality of life and care of residents in long-term care facilities as well as their legal rights. Mary Anne also helped create Residents’ Rights BINGO, a training tool for residents and staff of nursing homes and assisted living residences. Allen M.A. Buckingham served on the Colorado Commission on Aging from 1986 to 1998. The Commission\'s annual Senior Legacy Award was awarded posthumously to Allen in December 1998 and the event was renamed in his honor. Allen served on the national AARP Board of Directors, as regional director of the Region VIII U.S. Administration on Aging, and held other key positions during his career. Allen promoted the needs of older persons, especially that they live in dignity, have freedom and choice, and realize full and active participation in their society.
