Community Integration

A Life in Community

Disability Law Colorado believes that individuals with disabilities should live as independent a life as possible, making their own choices and determining their own future.  Progress has been made in Colorado to ensure that individuals with disabilities who want to live, work and play in the community can do so. But there are many who still think that large institutional settings are the “safest” place for people with disabilities. We believe that segregating people with disabilities, in order for them to receive services, is wrong and dangerous.

Community Independence

We have always promoted independence in the community over institutional care for people with disabilities. Colorado has a Transition Services program that should help people transitioning from a nursing home to the community. This resulted from a Department of Justice settlement that was based on a complaint we filed in 2016. If you have a concern because you are not able to access services to transition out of a nursing home, you may want to submit an Escalation Form to the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing.

We monitor nursing homes and continue to press for systemic change to improve the process for the many people still trapped in nursing homes. We may also investigate abuse or neglect if another entity is not already responsible for and conducting an investigation.

Please contact us if you would like to report a concern.
