Inside Edition Digital has released a new investigative segment examining conditions at Southern Peaks Regional Treatment Center, bringing national attention to concerns about the treatment of youth in the facility.
The segment builds on findings from a report published by Disability Law Colorado in October 2025. The report documented unsafe conditions and inadequate treatment at Southern Peaks following more than three years of monitoring, interviews with youth residents, and engagement with families and staff.
The investigation highlights ongoing concerns, including the use of restraint, inconsistent access to mental health care, and reports from youth describing unsafe and restrictive environments. These findings raise broader questions about oversight, accountability, and the standard of care provided to children with significant mental health needs.
Inside Edition Digital’s coverage features perspectives from families, advocates, and Disability Law Colorado’s Co-Legal Director, Emily Harvey, who co-authored the original report.
“Southern Peaks is supposed to provide a therapeutic environment — that’s the reason it exists,” said Harvey. “What we found instead is a place where children feel unsafe and unheard.”
The continued attention underscores the importance of sustained oversight and systemic reform to ensure safe, trauma-informed care for youth in Colorado.
